Lloyds Banking Group Community Fund - Vote for WIIGA!

The Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA) has been shortlisted for the Lloyds Banking Group Community Fund - one of only four groups shortlisted in the "Inverness Community".

The applications are now subject to a public vote and the successful group will receive grant funding of £5000.

WIIGA is a voluntary organisation committed to developing local sportspeople fulfil their potential by competing in the prestigious Natwest Island Games, a world-wide bi-annual event for island communities around the globe.

The Western Isles have competed in this event since 2005 and our local sportspeople continue to go from strength to strength, achieving medals at every Games.   Eilidh Mackenzie is a local success story, having won Gold at the 2007, 2009 and 2011 Games for the 800m and 1500m respectively and being selected to represent the Western Isles as an official Olympic Torchbearer.  The 2013 Games will be in Bermuda and the financial challenges faced by WIIGA and the participants will be difficult.

As a non profit making organisation, WIIGA relies on sponsorship, grant funding, fundraising and the personal contributions from the competitors themselves to cover the ever increasing costs of sending a squad to compete in the Games. We also assist with the training and preparation for the competitors by enabling them to attend training events and competitions on the mainland and to facilitate expert coaching and guidance for all the sports competing at the 2013 Games and beyond.

This Lloyds Banking Community Fund Grant could make a huge difference to our local sportspeople by providing much needed funds to support their continued development and help WIIGA to develop the eligible sports which the Western Isles can compete in at future Games
